The Spyderco Kapara as it comes from the factory does not feature a sharpening choil as featured in the Redback prototype and handmade models. I prefer blades featuring a choil to make sharpening easier for the end user.
The modification is simple to perform yourself. However I am equipped to make the modification easily so am offering it as an after market service.
If you wish to give it a go yourself check out my DIY video on youtube.
If you are purchasing a Kapara from me and would like me to modify the blade for you by adding a sharpening choil add this to your cart at the same time as the Kapara.
If you have already purchased a Kapara and would like me to modify it for please contact me about shipping arrangements before purchasing this modification.
- As this is a customization it could void the warranty with Spyderco for the Kapara.
- I will take me a few extra days to be able to perform the modification, I will be unable to ship it immediately.
The original prototype Redback that became the Spyderco Kapara featured a bright red G10 back spacer to match the spider it is named after.
The Kapara has done a brilliant job of bringing the prototype to market however the colour of the back spacer is a little more subdued than the original prototype. I thought it would be a great project for the new CNC to bring back the Redback and create an aftermarket back spacer to match the original concept.
The modification is simple to fit yourself. You will require a T8 Torx driver for the screws and that’s it.
I have produced an instruction video on youtube below.
If you are purchasing a Kapara from me and would like me to fit a Redback back spacer for you add this to your cart at the same time as the Kapara and let me know you would like it fitted via email.
- This is for an aftermarket back spacer to fit the Spyderco Kapara only. It does not include a Spyderco Kapara.
- These are now made to order so it could take a couple of weeks before being made and shipped out.
- There are several colour variants available. Select before ordering.
The Kapara is based on Australian custom knifemaker Alistair Phillips’ popular “Redback” folder design. Named after an Australian spider with a distinctive red stripe along the back of its abdomen, Spyderco’s Kapara (another name for the same redback spider) faithfully replicates Phillips’ distinctive style and craftsmanship, as well as the signature red backspacer of his custom knife.
Phillips originally created the Kapara as a personal carry knife to help him prepare healthy, vegetable-based meals. Its CPM® S30V® stainless steel blade is full-flat ground for exceptional edge geometry and has a fully accessible Trademark Round Hole™ for convenient one-handed opening with either hand. The gracefully styled handle has full, skeletonized stainless steel liners that provide structural strength and form the basis of the knife’s patented Compression Lock™ mechanism. They are capped by stunning solid carbon fiber scales that are precisely crowned to provide a secure, extremely comfortable grip. An index-finger choil at the base of the blade allows the user to choke up for enhanced control and helps draw attention to machined details on both sides of the blade’s pivot. To keep the Kapara poised for instant access, it includes a reversible deep-pocket wire clip for left or right-side, tip-up carry and a generously sized lanyard hole for the easy attachment of fobs or lanyards.
